For the Patriot.

Tribute of Respect.

At a meeting of the citizens of Davidson county, held in the Court House in Lexington, on the 18th day of May, 1882, B. B. Roberts was called to the Chair, and I. K. Perryman was requested to act as Secretary.  The object of the meeting was explained by Dr. W. R. Holt, which was to pay a just tribute of respect to our friend and fellow citizen, Richard A. Penry, who fell at the battle of Williamsburg, Va.

The following resolutions were submitted by Dr. W. R. Holt, for the consideration of the meeting, which, after a few concurrent remarks by B. A. Kittrell, were unanimously adopted.

Resolved, That we deeply regret to hear of the fall and death of our youthful citizen, Richard A. Penry, of the “Lexington Wild Cats” company, Fourteenth Regiment N. C. Troops, in the late battle at Williamsburg, Va.

Resolved, That we admire and applaud the noble and patriotic act of his volunteering at the age of fifteen years, at the first call of his country; of his faithful and diligent performance of duty; of his steady and gallant bearing on the field of battle, in repelling the advance of our cruel and vindictive enemies; and that we will long cherish the remembrance of his noble and disinterested acts of patriotism.

Resolved, That we offer our deepest feelings of condolence to his afflicted parents and family, and direct a copy of these proceeding to be transmitted to them, and to the Raleigh Standard, Salisbury Watchman and Greensborough Patriot with a request that they publish the same.

            On motion, the meeting adjourned.

                                    B. B. ROBERTS, Chairman

            I. K. PERRYMAN, Secretary.
